Gun control activist Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter was a victim of the Parkland shooting, said on MSNBC’s “The ReidOut” on Wednesday that the policies of former President Donald Trump led to the recent increase in mass shootings.
Anchor Joy Reid said, “All they’ve done in these states, including Florida, including Texas, is to make it easy. I mean, Donald Trump is going to this convention. Is he going to brag that under his presidential administration they made it easier for people with known mental health issues to buy a gun? They made it easier. So they want to lie and say it’s a mental health issue. Why did you make it easier for people with mental health issues to buy a gun? That’s what they did. The person who killed and massacred those people in Uvalde is the person who killed your daughter, and those beautiful children in Florida, on the right, in Marjory Stoneman Douglas, couldn’t have rented a car because they didn’t have not 25 years old. They will not pass a law. They will do nothing to stop them. They just make it easy for them. »
Guttenberg said: “It was one of the first things he did to the president was to loosen the restrictions on people with mental illness buying a gun, but one of the most treacherous things what he did was during COVID to call gun stores essential businesses because that led to this massive upsurge and escalation in violence that we see now. So, look, they did all that. They did, and now we have to live with the consequences of that.
