Trump’s MAGA movement has ‘characteristics of a fascist political party’

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday that former President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement had the “characteristics of a fascist political party.”

Partial transcript as follows:

MAJOR GARRETT: So former President Trump is saying MAGA Republicans are trying to save democracy. They want to be taken seriously on this issue. So let’s review what the former president said this week earlier. He said the 2020 election should be repeated, or he should be reinstated, and if re-elected in 2024, he would issue full apologies and pardons to those charged and/or convicted of having stormed the Capitol on January 6, rate that.

RASKIN: Well, first of all, if he says the election should be re-run, which he’s been saying all along, that’s totally outside the Constitution. There is no procedure for the military to take over the electoral machine and organize a new election, which is one of the things that his disgraced former national security adviser, Michael Flynn , was lobbying, and we know it was part of the January 6 conspiracy. And look, more than 60 courts have thrown out all of Donald Trump’s allegations of voter fraud and corruption. He had the benefit of more than 60 courts, including eight courts, where he appointed the judges, considered all these applications and they were all rejected. He was rejected in the United States and he lost the elections. Two of the characteristics of a fascist political party are one, they do not accept election results that do not go their way and two, they embrace political violence. And I think that’s why President Biden was right to sound the alarm this week about these continued attacks on our constitutional order from the outside by Donald Trump and his movement.
