Trump’s Kosovo envoy slams US over crisis – RT World News

Richard Grenell Blames Kosovo’s ‘Fascist’ Prime Minister for Tensions, Calls on State Department to Support Him

Richard Grenell, who brokered a Kosovo-Serbia deal under the Trump administration after taking over as head of the US intelligence community, on Sunday accused the “reckless” Prime Minister in Pristina for renewed tensions with Belgrade and criticized the State Department for authorizing it.

“What is happening in the Balkans is not Russia. Whoever tells you this is trying to manipulate you,” Grenelle tweeted Sunday evening. “It’s about Albin Kurti trying once again to give him [to] Serbia. He lives in the past.

“The people of Kosovo want peace and jobs, Albin. Stop looking for fights, “ Grenell added.

The Serbian military was placed on high alert and local Serbs erected roadblocks earlier in the day after Kosovo police showed up at two administrative crossing points with Serbia in the intention to enforce Kurti’s decision to confiscate Serbian license plates and documents. This would have effectively cut off the remaining Serbs living in the north of the breakaway province from their relatives.

According to Grenell, it was all about Kurti “take unilateral measures to reject Serbian identity cards and license plates inside Kosovo”, that he called “useless.”

Description of PM a “radical and experienced far-left fascist”, Grenelle further away called his actions “foolish” and “reckless,” and urged Serbian leaders to “don’t take the bait.”

“Even the Albanians know that Kurti is the problem”, Grenelle tweeted. He also blamed Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who met with Kurti and Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani earlier in the week.

US President Joe Biden has “ignored the Balkans”, the envoy added, pointing out that he had negotiated multiple agreements between Kosovo and Serbia under President Donald Trump, trying to overcome the conflict through economic cooperation. Grenelle also accused the EU of orchestrating war crimes charges against Kosovo President Hashim Thaci to punish him for working with Trump – which led to Kurti and Osmani taking power.

During the Trump presidency, Grenell served as U.S. Ambassador to Germany, Special Envoy for Kosovo, and Acting Director of National Intelligence (February-May 2020).

Kurti is a former student activist, whose Self-Determination (Vetevendosje) party pleaded for the independence of the separatist province, refused any negotiation with Belgrade and even defended unification with Albania. He had become Prime Minister at the start of 2020, but was ousted after just over a month in a vote of no confidence. He returned to power a year later, with a two-thirds majority.

In the final minutes of Sunday, Kurti’s government announced that it “report” the implementation of its documentary policy, after a request from the American ambassador in Pristina, Jeffrey Hovenier.

NATO occupied Kosovo in 1999, after a 78-day air war against what was then Yugoslavia. The province declared independence in 2008, with Western support. While the United States and most of its allies have recognized this, Serbia, Russia, China and the UN in general have not.
