Russia would not have invaded Ukraine if Donald Trump was in the White House, the former president insisted at a rally in South Carolina.
Russian President Vladimir Putin will not stop his military assault on Ukraine, Trump has said.
“It could lead to World War III. I see what’s happening, because if you think Putin is going to stop, it’s going to go from bad to worse. He’s not going to accept it, and we don’t have anyone to talk to him with. You had someone to talk to him with me,” Trump told the crowd in Florence, South Carolina, on Saturday night.
“No one has ever been tougher on Russia than me,” he continued, adding, “I was the one who stopped the pipelines,” referring to the Nord Stream II gas pipeline linking Russia to Western Europe.
The ex-president came under fire last month after he appeared to praise Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, calling the aggressive move “genius”, “smart” and “scholarly”.
“Russia wouldn’t have annexed an inch of Ukrainian territory if I was in the White House,” he said.

“I am the only president in the 21st century to whom Russia has not invaded any other country and neither has anyone else,” he said. “We had peace through strength because the world was calm because America was strong.”
“The fake news said my personality was going to get us into a war… but in reality, it was my personality that kept us from going to war,” Trump said.
