Tom Emmer’s public expression of gratitude to Donald Trump for supporting his bid for Speaker of the House has not aged well, after the former president bragged online that he had actually “killed” his chances of winning the coveted position.
The Republican congressman won his party’s nomination early Tuesday, but immediately faced staunch opposition from a number of right-wing members of the House Republican conference. He abandoned the race four hours later.
This came just over 24 hours after he blatantly posted online thanks to Mr Trump for his apparent support. Mr. Trump was asked on Monday whether he would support Mr. Emmer for speaker of the House, although the latter has not always been his “biggest fan.”
“He’s my biggest fan now because he called me yesterday and said, ‘I’m your biggest fan,'” Mr. Trump responded, adding: “We look at a lot of people and I try to stay out of it.” as much as possible.
“I always got on well with him, I got on well with all of them. (There are) a lot of good people.
In his message on Monday, Mr. Emmer wrote: “Thank you, Mr. President. If my colleagues elect me Speaker of the House, I look forward to continuing our strong working relationship.
By Tuesday afternoon, it became clear that Mr. Emmer would not be able to secure the 217 votes required for the presidency, forcing him to withdraw from the race.
Shortly after, Mr. Trump posted a link to an article by Policytitled “‘I Killed Him’: How Trump Torpedoed Tom Emmer’s Bid for President.”
The article described how, according to Trump campaign sources, the former president had not appreciated Mr. Emmer’s claims that the two men were close political allies. After Mr. Emmer won the nomination, he expressed his dislike of his candidacy.
” He finished. It’s finish. I killed him,” Mr. Trump told an ally on Tuesday afternoon, according to Policy.
Mr. Trump denounced Mr. Emmer on Truth Social and said voting for him would be a “tragic mistake.”
He wrote: “I have many wonderful friends who want to become Speaker of the House, and some are truly great warriors. RINO Tom Emmer, whom I don’t know well, is not one of them. He never respected the power of the Trump endorsement, nor the scale and scope of MAGA – MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! »
“I think he’s learned his lesson now, because he says he’s still pro-Trump, but who can be sure? Did he only change because that’s what it takes to win? The Republican Party can’t take that risk, because that’s not where America First Voters are. Voting for a globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake!
