Trey Lance has “the complete impression” that he will be QB1 in 2022?

Jimmy Garoppolo’s trade market hasn’t grown much, leading to speculation that the San Francisco 49ers could keep him and wait a bit longer before switching to Trey Lance altogether. Apparently that’s not the message that was sent to last year’s third-choice.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler wrote in his Insider column this week that Lance was led to believe he would start in 2022.

“Trey Lance got the full impression backstage that he will be starting in 2022,” Fowler wrote. “So while San Francisco is expected to eventually move Garoppolo, it feels like the team is in a waiting pattern on that.”

Fowler also said teams have a “legitimate concern” about Garoppolo’s surgically repaired shoulder. That’s apparently the reason at least one team hasn’t pursued a trade for Jimmy G.

Lance is an extremely raw prospect. He played in only 19 games at North Dakota State, so he didn’t even have a lot of college experience. The Niners are coming off a season in which Garoppolo led them to the NFC Championship Game, where they lost by just one field goal to eventual Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams.

Garoppolo probably wants a starting opportunity elsewhere, but there aren’t many teams looking for a starting quarterback. Some have speculated that the Niners could keep Garoppolo and give Lance more time to develop. If they’ve ever told Lance otherwise, it could create an awkward situation.
