Trent Barrett’s Bulldogs future, club meeting, Canterbury, Phil Gould

Canterbury Bulldogs officials have called an urgent meeting for the next 48 hours to discuss the team’s poor start to the season, as well as the future of manager Trent Barrett.

Nine’s rugby league reporter Michael Chammas broke the news on Sunday evening.

The encounter comes after the Bulldogs’ disastrous start to 2022, where they currently sit at the bottom of the table, with just two wins in 10 games.

“The patience of some of the powerful at the club is starting to wear thin.

“This is a member-run club and the members have been quite vocal all weekend to express their displeasure with the directors.

“Trent Barrett shouldn’t be at the meeting. Phil Gould though, he should be there.”

Barrett is currently in the second year of a three-year contract.

The meeting comes despite recent comments from Chief Football Officer Gould backing Barrett to be the club’s long-term manager.

“He’ll be coaching the Bulldogs for a long time as far as I’m concerned. He’s got such a wonderful nature as a coach,” Gould said in March.

“He has great knowledge, great delivery, great communication.

Canterbury last season finished bottom of the ladder.

Another season without finals football would make it six years in a row, with 2016 being the last time the club reached the playoffs.
