Toyota recalls Tundra, Lexus LX models over risk of stalled engines
Toyota will recall about 102,000 vehicles over concerns that stray debris in the engine could cause stalling and loss of motive power, federal regulators said.
The recall will affect approximately 3,500 Lexus LX 600 SUVs from the 2022 or 2023 model years, as well as 98,600 Toyota Tundra pickup trucks from the same period, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The agency warned that the V35A in these vehicles engines produced during this period at some factories may not have been cleaned of machining debris during assembly.
“If the aforementioned machining debris adheres to the bearings and engine operation continues at higher loads over time, bearing failure may occur,” NHTSA wrote. “This can result in potential engine knocking, erratic engine operation, engine failure to start, and/or engine stalling.”
Hybrid vehicles can continue to be driven for limited distances in the event of an engine failure, NHTSA said.
The recall follows reports of engine failure in March 2022, according to a timeline made public by the agency. The timeline does not mention any injuries or deaths resulting from the engine problems.
No remedy is yet available to resolve the problem. Notifications to owners of affected vehicles should be sent by July 29. Homeowners are advised to contact the NHTSA Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 with any questions.
