Regan Grace scored a try from 40 yards out in their return game as St Helens revenged last month’s shock defeat at Toulouse with a 28-14 victory over the Super League strugglers to take a four-point lead at the top.

The Saints winger, out since late March with a hamstring injury, was one of five goalscorers in Kristian Woolf’s side, whose power and pace ultimately proved too much for Toulouse .

A group of all-French officials stepped in at the last minute to ensure the game went ahead after scheduled referee Liam Moore and his fellow RFL officials found themselves stranded in Munich following delays at the Manchester Airport.

Saints got off to a slow start, losing the ball twice in their opening two sets and then conceding an offside penalty, with Chris Hankinson turning in from 40 yards out to put Toulouse ahead in the sixth minute.

But the visitors fought back almost immediately when Jack Welsby ran through midfield to free Morgan Knowles for a 30-yard run to the line, clearing full-back Olly Ashall-Bott.

Winger Tommy Makinson was next down the right after Saints stretched the Toulouse defense but was unable to convert his own try from the touchline.

A clash of headers between Toulouse forwards Daniel Alvaro and Harrison Hansen delayed the match, with both players bleeding profusely as they left the pitch, while Saints’ Sione Mata’utia also had to be assessed for a head injury.

Konrad Hurrell’s 40-yard run seven minutes from half-time extended the champions’ lead to 14-2, with Makinson adding a simple conversion.

Toulouse striker Hansen, who returned with his head injury repaired, came forward for a try early in the second half with Hankinson adding the conversion to reduce the margin to six.

Saints came close a few times when the final pass was deemed to have been brought forward – but they weren’t to be denied when Welsby broke through a tiring defense at home for a try, converted by Makinson to give them extra breathing space.

When Grace struck shortly after, the visitors seemed out of sight, but Toulouse center Hankinson crossed the line on the restart, adding the conversion to reduce the backlog to 26-14.

In the pouring rain, Makinson failed to convert Saints’ first penalty of the match – unlike an astonishing 12 for Toulouse – but did manage with his second just before the whistle, sealing victory for his side.
