Tottenham’s Antonio Conte tests positive for COVID-19

Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur are enjoying solid form at the start of the spring but received bad news ahead of Saturday’s home game against Brighton & Hove Albion.

As Charlie Eccleshare and Jacob Whitehead wrote for The Athletic, Tottenham boss Antonio Conte has tested positive for COVID-19 after apparently experiencing mild symptoms of the virus following last Saturday’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa. Conte has since distanced himself from players and staff, but is now asymptomatic and has therefore been allowed to observe training sessions from a distance.

According to the Evening Standard’s Simon Collings, Conte will hold his pre-match press conference virtually on Thursday. As long as he remains symptom-free, he should be ready to go to work in Saturday’s contest against Brighton in person.

Tottenham beat Brighton 3-1 in the FA Cup tie in February and then cruised to a 2-0 win over those same opponents in last month’s League game. Heading into the weekend, Tottenham are fourth in the Premier League table and three points clear of rivals Arsenal in the race for Champions League places, but the Gunners are one game short.

The Athletic add that assistants Cristian Stellini and Ryan Mason are holding physical training sessions in Conte’s absence, while Conte’s brother Gianluca is handling video analysis this week.

Tottenham will be looking to claim their fifth straight win ahead of the Easter break, ideally with Conte present.
