Tottenham star Ryan Sessegnon inspired by Chelsea wingers Reece James and Ben Chilwell as he aims to ‘restart’ his career under Antonio Conte

Tottenham Hotspur star Ryan Sessegnon takes inspiration from Chelsea’s Reece James and Ben Chilwell as he returns from injury under new boss Antonio Conte.

The England Under-21 ace made his third appearance of the season against Leeds as a replacement for goalscorer Sergio Reguilon and he is now set to start against NS Mura in the Europa Conference League.

The left-back moved to north London for £ 25million from Fulham in 2019 after excelling in both the League and the Premier League.

Hopes were high for the youngster after his stint on the deadline under Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, but injury issues and an inability to break through in the starting XI mean Sessegnon has only played 14 times for the club.

A loan to Bundesliga side Hoffenheim last season has benefited the starlet, seeing him score twice and provide three assists in 29 appearances.

And although injuries have continued to plague the 21-year-old’s career at Spurs this season, the defender believes he can look to fellow Premier League wingers James and Chilwell to help him regain goal form. he had in Fulham.

Sessegnon said: “They are [James and Chillwell] very well offensively and defensively for Chelsea this season. At every opportunity, they come into the box, score goals, get assists.

“It’s something I like to do too. Thanks to them they are playing very well at the moment in a system similar to what we are playing where for me I can get into the box and score and create chances.

New Spurs boss Antonio Conte is known to play a style of football that involves full-backs, so it’s no surprise that Sessegnon sees the Italian’s arrival as an opportunity to reclaim his old job.

“Training [under Conte] is perfect for me, ”explained the Roehampton-born player. “I probably feel the most comfortable playing this left winger position and that suits me as well. Yes I would say.

“This is the job I started at Fulham because everyone knew I was a left-back. And then I got pushed further so when you combine the two [when] I can play as a back, that’s perfect.

When asked if his return against Leeds marked the restart of his career, Sessegnon replied: “Yeah, you could say something like that. When I was at Fulham I was young, I played every game and like you say people were talking about me.

“In football things don’t always turn out the way you want them to, the ups and downs of your career. This could be my chance to really kickstart my career here and move forward. I am very relaxed about the situation and just look forward to the future.

“I feel a lot better right now. There are some situations where I have to deal with the load in my hamstrings, but it’s behind me and I just can’t wait.

New 21-year-old boss Conte clearly recognizes Sessegnon’s untapped potential, he added: “Now he’s [Sessegnon] ready to start the game. I can’t wait to see his performance because he is a talented player with room for improvement.

“He has to be available for every game. Ryan has great potential. I have seen in the past that he suffered from a lot of injuries. Now we are trying to work the right way with him.
