Tottenham player ratings v Southampton: Dejan Kulusevski and Ryan Sessegnon superb but Harry Kane clumsy
J

Ottenham justified pre-season optimism by starting the new Premier League campaign with a 4-1 thrashing of Southampton.

Trailing a fine volley from James Ward-Prowse, Spurs led at the interval thanks to headers from Ryan Sessegnon and Eric Dier.

A comical own goal from Mohammed Salisu and Dejan Kulusevski’s best strike completed the scoring after the break as Antonio Conte’s side started the season with a remarkable performance.

Dan Kilpatrick was at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to assess Spurs players…

Hugo Lloris 7

Couldn’t make it to the volley well taken from Ward-Prowse but well saved from Joe Aribo on an otherwise calm afternoon.

Christian Romero 8

Set the tone by flying into tackles in a typically assertive and commanding display. Used the ball well as Spurs built from the back.

Eric Dier 8

Scored with a deft header from the cross from Son and led the Spurs defensive back, helping fend off the occasional Saints threat from set pieces from Ward-Prowse.

Ben Davis 8

Expertly came out of the defense and tested Gavin Bazunu with a long range effort in the first half. Aribo got behind him on one occasion but Lloris made the save.

Emerson Royal 8

Went to the ground too easily on the boundary line, allowing Djenepo to cross for the first goal. Made amends with two assists in as many minutes early in the second half.

Ryan Sessegnon 9

Showed he was ready to fight with Perisic and was already learning from the Croatian legend with an encouraging display. Showed a killer instinct at the back post for the equalizer and saw a second goal ruled out for offside on an afternoon where he repeatedly found himself in dangerous positions.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg 8

Was caught under Djenepo’s cross for the Saints goal but started the movement leading to Dier’s goal with a raked pass for Son and created another big chance for the Korean with a chipped ball.

Rodrigue Bentancur 8

Generally calm in possession, using the ball well from the base of midfield and snapping into tackles.

Dejan Kulusevsky 9

Continued where he left off last season with an outstanding performance. His brilliant cross set up Sessegnon and he scored the goal he deserved in the second half. A constant threat on the right flank.

Heung-min son 8

Crossed for Dier’s goal and was unlucky not to score in a spirited display. Saw a goal-bound effort hit Jack Stephens arm and fly out from a good position.

Harry Kane 7

Looking a little clunky, which is often the case at the start of the season. Showed some nice touches and forced Bazunu into a smart save in the first half.
