Sailor Eya Guezguez, who represented Tunisia at the Tokyo Olympics in windsurfing last year, died following an accident while training for the national team, the International Olympic Committee announced ( IOC).
Guezguez, 16, sadly drowned when the boat she was sailing with her twin sister Sarra capsized in strong winds during a training session.
Eya drowned, but her twin sister was saved.
“I am shocked by the news of the death of sailor Eya Guezguez. She was an inspirational talent and a role model for her generation of athletes,” IOC President Thomas Bach said in a statement posted on the IOC website. the organization.
“Eya Guezguez’s participation in Tokyo 2020 alongside her twin sister Sarra will continue to inspire girls around the world. Our hearts go out to her family, friends and the Olympic community in Tunisia.”

The twins competed in Tokyo aged just 16 and competed together in the 49er FX class in Tokyo where they finished 21st.
