Naomi Osaka was in tears after being forced out of her first round match at the Canadian Open.
The Toronto tournament is one of the biggest events leading up to the US Open, which begins later this month.
Osaka is a two-time winner of the New York tournament, in 2018 and 2020, but has recently struggled with injuries and mental health issues.
She faced Kaia Kanepi in the first round and led 7-6, 3-0 before deciding she couldn’t continue.
The 24-year-old was visibly upset as she left court.
“I felt my back from the start of the game, and despite my best efforts, I just couldn’t do it today,” Osaka said after the game.
“I want to pay tribute to Kaia for playing well and wish her all the best for the rest of the tournament.”
Afterwards, Osaka commented on Twitter, “Today really isn’t a good day…”

It was only his third match since Roland-Garros in May.
Recently, she brought her father back in his coaching training.
“I wanted to bring my dad back because he always pushes me off the beaten track,” Osaka said.
“Whenever I think something is really wrong, he always makes me realize that things are a lot more positive than they seem. When I’m stressed, he starts dancing or does something to make me feel better.
“So it’s just nice to have him with me and it reminds me of when I was a kid. For now, he would be my main coach. I would give him that title.
