Little pretty things Star Barton Cowperthwaite has been diagnosed with stage 2 brain cancer.
The 31-year-old actor and ballet dancer revealed on Instagram that he had been diagnosed with “at least a stage 2 glioma,” but noted that the “pretty decent sized brain tumor” hadn’t spread anywhere elsewhere in his body.
Along with the announcement, Cowperthwaite shared an image of himself wearing a hospital gown and two brain scans showing the tumor.
A glioma is a “growth of cells that begins in the brain or spinal cord” that can “put pressure on brain or spinal cord tissue and cause symptoms” as it grows, according to the clinic Mayo. There are several types of gliomas, some of which grow slowly and are not considered cancerous, while other malignant variations “grow rapidly and can invade healthy brain tissue.”
“The only treatment for something like this is brain surgery,” Cowperthwaite said. “Until now, the doctors were confident that they would be able to remove most of the tumor and that after a successful operation and rehabilitation, I would operate as my (amazing, talented, brilliant, hilarious) self ).That being said, it looks like scans and exams will be a regular part of my life for the rest of my life.”
Cowperthwaite said he and his family were “taking several days to get a second opinion” but that he expected to have surgery to remove the tumor by “the middle or end of next week.”
He concluded: “I will do my best to be open about the journey here. I plan to fully bounce back to be better than my former glory! Feel free to contact us and I will do my best to stay connected. with as many people as possible.”
In a follow-up video posted on social media on Saturday, Cowperthwaite thanked his followers for their support and explained how the tumor was found.
“Over the past eight weeks, I have had several seizures, the most recent of which landed me in the emergency room,” he said. “They were able to perform a CT scan, which discovered an abnormality, and from that point on, they sent me to another facility to get more in-depth images.”
Cowperthwaite then underwent an MRI, which revealed a “lemon-sized glioma” in the right frontal lobe of his brain. “Luckily, it’s not an immediate concern. They were able to release me and send me home,” he said. “We’re rallying the troops and strategizing. We’re meeting with some of the best of the best on Monday, and I can decide where I want to have surgery next week.”
Promising to “keep sending updates” throughout his health journey, Cowperthwaite concluded: “All support is welcome and I will keep you all updated.” »
