Timo Werner has moved closer to a return to RB Leipzig, with reports that Chelsea have agreed a cut-price deal with the German side.
The Blues are ready to take a financial hit to offload the runaway German, who is set to leave Stamford Bridge for just over half the price the London club paid for him just a few years ago.
Werner hasn’t had the desired impact at Stamford Bridge since joining in 2020 for £47.5million.
In two seasons, he managed 23 goals in 89 appearances and was clearly out of favor after just one.
And multiple sources claim the 26-year-old is now set to return to Leipzig – where he has scored 95 goals in 159 games – for a fee of around £25million.
He could even undergo his medical return to Germany on Tuesday.
The Blues signed Romelu Lukaku last summer as they looked for a more prolific striker, but that move also fell through with the Belgian now on loan at Inter Milan.
Raheem Sterling is Chelsea’s big attacking signing so far this year, another hint that Werner is unwanted by compatriot and manager Thomas Tuchel.

Werner and Tuchel are claimed to have argued over his playing time and the role he plays in the manager’s system.
And the striker himself made it clear he was at least considering leaving when he spoke in pre-season.
Werner made just two appearances during Chelsea’s pre-season campaign and was left out of the squad for their 1-0 win over Everton on the Premier League opening weekend.
“First of all, the most important thing is that I’m happy. I’m happy when I play and score goals,” Werner said.
” That’s a fact. That’s what I have to take care of and the other things will come. I could be happy anywhere.
“I think of course the manager always has different ideas, different thoughts and what you need in different games, I think in many games I wasn’t in his thoughts, so I try to change that.
“It’s clear that I want to play more and I should play more to be fit for the World Cup first and also to have a chance to play in the World Cup.
“I don’t think it changes anything whether it’s a winter or summer World Cup. I think if I play half or the season or the whole season, I should play.
And now, its release should be confirmed imminently.
Meanwhile, Tuchel has revealed that Marcos Alonso is set to leave the club, after the Spanish defender was also left out of the squad with a move to Barcelona on the horizon.
The manager said after their win over Everton: “He [Alonso] tries to leave and we accepted this wish.
“That’s why it wouldn’t have made sense to put him on the pitch today. He would have been on the pitch otherwise, but in this situation it was the right thing to do.
Callum Hudson-Odoi is also likely to leave Chelsea with Southampton and Leicester City credited with interest.
