Time for decisions | The Journal of Montreal

It is not because CF Montreal is on vacation in the field that the technical staff are unemployed for a few months. On the contrary, the offseason will have to be a very busy one for Olivier Renard and the technical staff of the team, who will have to make decisions and thus prepare the team for the next campaign.

Among the players, I imagine that Bjorn Johnsen and Kiki Struna will not be back with the team.

For his part, the defender of the year in Montreal, Rudy Camacho, has made it official that he will not set foot again with the Montreal eleven. Thus, it is already three players who will be replaced, including two who are part of a defense that will be completely revamped.

Then, it will be necessary to find another player who will be able to help offensively alongside Romell Quioto and Mason Toye.

Among goalkeepers, James Pantemis was the undisputed number 1 at the start of the season. But towards the end, it was a lot less clear with the emergence of Sebastian Breza.

CF Montreal will therefore have to turn to players like Lassi Lappalainen, Ballou Tabla and company, in addition to Academy players who were part of the first team and those who are ready to take the next step in their career.

Balance sheet

Wilfried Nancy and his team will therefore have to take stock of how their playing philosophy can be implemented even more. They need to know what to change because a philosophy of play can dictate the players in the squad. But it can also be the other way around.

Will Nancy and her acolytes keep the same tangent? Will the team remain a team fighting for a place in the playoffs? What will be the decision on the two competitions, the MLS competitions and the CONCACAF Champions League competitions?

You have to have an initial plan with priorities and objectives. Will MLS be the priority? It’s up to them to determine!

I’m sure everyone inside the organization wants to see the club grow clearly. This season, that progression has been on a roller coaster rather than a straight line.

In the first half of the campaign, CFM performed quite well with solid defensive play, lots of dry cleaning and several offensive solutions. But it was on the return from the first international break that things took a turn for the worse as this execution and performance were no longer really there when only Quioto was an offensive threat.

The technical staff have a lot to think about. Personally, I would like more flexibility in the playing system. For best results, I believe a rigid system can benefit from small adjustments here and there.

It’s important to have a philosophy that is clear, but at the same time, that is flexible. Obviously, that will depend on the players Nancy will have on hand in 2022.

Moreover, the head coach had a year to put his mark on the team and impose his game plan. But the second year, things will have to really progress to have better results.

We all want to get out of mediocrity in order to be able to offer something better, to get closer to excellence.
