Joseph O’Brien has put an end to Thunder Moon’s disappointing performance in the 2000 Guineas and is hoping he can bounce back in the St James’s Palace Stakes next week.
The event for three year olds at Royal Ascot typically brings together the guineas’ form lines with those who missed out on the classics for one reason or another.
Thunder Moon had an 11-2 chance at Newmarket, but trailed last of 14 runners.
“Thunder Moon obviously disappointed at Newmarket, so we put a line on that race. We had an eye on the Irish Guineas, but when the ground seemed to be soft – which it was – we turned to go to Ascot. and its preparation went well, ”O’Brien told Nick Luck’s Daily Podcast.
“Nothing really was revealed other than being very upset before the race we didn’t have a lot of excuses. He’s been fine since unfortunately these things happen and we just put a line through. .
“There’s always the possibility (which he hasn’t trained on) but his job has been nice at home. He’s always been a hard worker and his job has been good in preparation for this race. never until they do it on the track and that’s where it counts.
“I think it’s a suitable race, a relatively easy mile compared to the Curragh, it’s definitely easier than that, so it feels like a good race for him. I think he’s going with an outside chance, certainly good luck if he can get back to his best form. “
O’Brien was also disappointed with his main juvenile filly from last year, Pretty Gorgeous, who must have missed Newmarket and could only finish seventh in the Irish Guineas.
“She did really well. It was well documented that we didn’t have the smoothest run with her, but I was happy with her at the Curragh, I was happy with her comeback and I am nice to bring her out again, “said O’Brien.
“I think her ideal terrain is the easy side of the good, but she has proven to be effective on all surfaces. I’m pretty happy with the terrain for her.
“I feel good with the Ascot team, we might not have great chances but we have some great ones. I think Pretty Gorgeous could be our best chance to go there. would be very happy if we could have one on the board. “
