Manchester United’s new Premier League season went from bad to worse as they fell to a nightmarish 4-0 loss to Brentford on Saturday.
After losing 2-1 to Brighton on the opening weekend, the hope for Erik ten Hag’s side was to bounce back with a solid performance against the Bees in London.
Unfortunately, the United players haven’t received the memo.
David De Gea has a reputation as one of the Premier League’s best goalkeepers, but he pulled off a shocking error after just ten minutes to put Brentford ahead.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who received a surprise start at the Community Stadium in Brentford, was caught dawdling over the ball by Mathias Jensen who played the ball to Josh Dasilva who hit a routine effort towards goal from 20 yards out.
Unfortunately, De Gea got it wrong and knocked the ball into his own net in a moment of genuine embarrassment.
Things got even worse for the Spaniard eight minutes later when he attempted to play the ball past Christian Eriksen from a goal kick, only for the Dane to lose the ball to Jensen who headed home to make it 2-0 to Les Abeilles after just 18 minutes.
Eriksen was having an uncomfortable afternoon as he faced his former club, with Brentford fans booing him every time he touched the ball, but for United that was the least of their problems.

Things got even worse after half an hour when a free kick saw Ben Mee head home in the penalty area, before Bryan Mbeumo scored to make it 4-0 in a first half quite amazing.
Ten Hag made three half-time changes to add a more physical dynamic to his squad – swapping struggling Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Fred for Raphael Varane, Tyrell Malacia and Scott McTominay.
But that wasn’t enough to get back into the game as Brentford saw out their game with their four-goal lead intact.
talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan was one of many to react to the performance on social media and couldn’t believe what he was watching.
“This outrageous group of miscreants at Manchester United need to start representing this club properly,” he tweeted.
“They’re so light, mentally puny, playing when the option isn’t there, because that’s what they practiced.”
United legend Gary Neville, meanwhile, was simply stunned by the way the Red Devils fell apart, with oles heard from Brentford supporters as a nightmarish first half ended.
Liverpool legend and Sky Sports training partner Jamie Carragher didn’t really help his mood…
“Brentford haven’t got it, they’re all over the place like a rash, Manchester United are in deep trouble,” Neville said in a co-comment.
“They’re rushed like you wouldn’t believe and they crumble in those first 20 minutes.
“In shock, Erik ten Hag… and that’s no surprise at all.
“He picked the smallest team he could have picked thinking he’ll overtake Brentford. But it’s 5’9” Lisandro Martinez against Ben Mee. No chance.
“You have to deal with the physical aspect of the game in the Premier League and Manchester United don’t. I have to say it’s like a men’s team against under-nines.
“They were maimed, intimidated, disturbed like you wouldn’t believe.
“What a first half of football we see here – the annihilation of Manchester United.”
