BERLIN — A pickpocket stole German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s wallet while she was shopping in Berlin on Thursday.
Merkel’s wallet was in her purse who was hanging from his shopping cart when he was caught, according to German tabloid Bild, which first reported on the incident.
Berlin police confirmed to the newspaper that the incident happened around 11:40 a.m. Thursday. According to the report, Merkel did not call the police from the store, but went to a nearby police department to report the incident.
Merkel’s bodyguard, who accompanied her to the grocery store, was unable to prevent the theft.
Merkel, who retired from politics last December, has a reputation for doing her own shopping, with her choice of products sometimes subject to intense press scrutiny – such as when she was seen buying a few bottles of wine during the first coronavirus lockdown in 2020.
