These New York Residents Can’t Walk Away From Jury Duty
Manhattan residents summoned as jurors could be in for a nasty surprise.
Manhattanites can now be called to the courthouse to perform their civic duty every four years, instead of six, according to a quietly introduced change from January 2019.
The new deadline applies to those who served less than three days. Anyone who served three to 10 days is still excused for six years.
The change was made in Manhattan after the “pool of jurors to send questionnaires to was exhausted,” said justice system spokesman Lucian Chalfen.
But the state’s standard jury eligibility questionnaire still asks anyone who served on a jury within six years to submit proof to be excused.
“There’s not enough room on the questionnaire form to explain all of this,” Chalfan said.
