NEW YORK (NewsNation Now) – Investigators are trying to determine why security doors failed to close when a fire broke out in a New York City skyscraper, allowing thick smoke to rise through the tower and killed 17 people, including eight children, in the city’s deadliest fire in more than three decades.

A faulty electric heater apparently started the fire in the 19-story building in the Bronx on Sunday, firefighters said. The flames damaged only a small part of the building, but smoke seeped through the open apartment door and turned the stairwells into dark, ash-choked death traps. Stairs were the only method of escape in a tower too high for fire escapes.

Among the dead were three children of Haja Dukuray and Haji Dukuray, from Gambia, according to a family member. Haja’s uncle told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the children’s parents did not survive.

“It’s a very close-knit community. We’re mostly from a town in Gambia called Alunghare, so we’re all family, ”said Dukuray, who traveled to the Bronx on Monday from his home in Delaware. “Most of the people here, we’re all related in one way or another.”

Most of the 17 victims killed have been identified.

Here is what we know about the identified victims:

“The son, Mustapha, was just an amazing boy and almost every neighbor knows him,” said one parent. “I hear stories about him right now, knocking on doors during the fire to help people.”

In Masjid-ur-Rahmah, a mosque a few blocks from the building, more than two dozen people gathered in solidarity on Monday. Many of those who pray at the mosque live in the building.

Gambian Ambassador to the United States Dawda Fadera said on Monday he had traveled from Washington, DC to New York to learn more about the blaze and to share official condolences from the country’s president. West Africa.
