The world’s skinniest skyscraper, New York’s Steinway Tower, is ready for its first residents
The Steinway Tower, or 111 West 57th Street, has an aspect ratio of 24:1, making it “the tallest skyscraper in the world”, according to the developers.
The Midtown Manhattan development includes 60 apartments spread across the tower’s 84 floors and adjacent Steinway Hall building.
The tower was designed by New York-based architecture firm SHoP Architects and built by JDS Development, Property Markets Group and Spruce Capital Partners, with construction beginning in 2013. The towering tower is an addition to Steinway Hall, a historic 1925 building known as the former home of piano maker Steinway and Sons and a concert hall. This former cultural center has been transformed into luxury homes.
The facade of the tower features blocks of terracotta, a material that appears to change color and texture when viewed in different lights and from different angles.
The Steinway Tower is now opening its doors to new residents, but if the building’s silhouette is skinny, the prices certainly aren’t, ranging from $7.75 million for a studio to $66 million for the penthouse.
