‘The View’ co-host Sunny Hostin claims eclipse caused by climate change

Sunny Hostin, co-host of “The View,” blamed Monday’s solar eclipse, Friday’s earthquake and the expected cicada breeding season on “climate change.”

“All of these things together could perhaps lead us to believe that either climate change exists or that something is actually happening,” she said Monday.

A 4.8 magnitude earthquake was felt in New York and New Jersey on Friday; The highly anticipated solar eclipse swept across the continental United States on Monday.

Hostin also claimed that the makeup artist at her studio “put on her coat” and “ran down the hall” during the earthquake saying, “Jesus is coming” and “The rapture is here.”

But co-hosts Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg pushed back on her theory.

“Except that earthquakes are not at the mercy of climate change. It’s underground. This is not possible,” Behar said.

“What about global warming? ” she answered.

“No, it happens,” Goldberg said. “And the eclipse, they knew about the upcoming eclipse because eclipses happen, and they can actually tell when these things are going to happen.”

Hostin pointed out that this was the first time in 100 years that two different cicada broods emerged at the same time for their breeding season, but Goldberg quickly shut it down, arguing that it happened every 17 years.

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin joked that Trump caused the earthquake: “I read online that the epicenter of the earthquake was actually in Bedminster, New Jersey… Fun fact.” So this is coming from Trump.

Others have been criticized for similar stances, including Christina Amira Khalil, a Green Party member and U.S. Senate candidate for New Jersey, who went viral after posting a similar theory on social media, claiming that the earthquake that shook New York and New Jersey on Friday was caused by climate change.

“I experienced my first earthquake in New Jersey. We never have earthquakes,” she wrote. “The climate crisis is real. The strangest experience ever.

The post was widely mocked and received a fact-checked “Community Note” providing more context.

Khalil eventually deleted the post and switched his account to “protected” mode so that the public could no longer see his posts.
