If ever there was a Pyrrhic victory – a victory that comes at a huge cost – this is it. Yes, Johnny Depp won all three of his libel suits against Amber Heard, when she only won one. And quantitatively, he received more money: 10 million dollars against 2 million dollars.
But in the end, they both destroyed each other. They came across as miserable, insufferable, and vindictive people who hated each other so much that they decided to exploit the justice system for revenge.
The trial in a Virginia courtroom ended, thankfully, on Wednesday. The two verdicts capped a ridiculous spectacle that spanned seven agonizing weeks. That audiences can’t get enough of this “horror show” is a sad commentary on America’s voyeuristic obsessions.
JOHNNY DEPP WINS DEFAMATION CASE AGAINST AMBER HEARD
If either litigant thought a trial would somehow restore their already tattered reputation, they were wrong. The brutal ugliness of what spilled out in court stained them both further.
We learned, for example, of feces on their bed, vicious fights, temper tantrums fueled by drug and alcohol rages, a severed finger, photos of Depp passed out on the floor, a video of him in trashing furniture, the two taunting each other, he calls her a “gold digger” and a “worthless prostitute” as she accuses him of sexual assault with a bottle.
JOHNNY DEPP AND AMBER HEARD RELEASE STATEMENTS FOLLOWING JURY VERDICT
That’s really despicable in a chronically toxic relationship. It made your average load of dirty laundry sparkling clean.
The worst moment for Depp came when his text message to a fellow actor was read aloud in court: “Let’s drown her! Let’s drown her before we burn her. F*her burnt corpse!”
TOP 5 POINTS TO TAKE AWAY FROM THE JOHNNY DEPP DEFAMATION TRIAL
Equally despicable was a recording of Heard admitting she punched Depp and mocking him as a “baby”. Perhaps their therapist put it best when she testified that there had been “mutual abuse.” No kidding. There’s a smack my ass revelation.
The jury was not gullible enough to believe Heard’s attorney, who claimed during closing arguments that the First Amendment protects his client’s defamatory editorial in the Washington Post. It was a classic lawyer subterfuge.
Someone might want to lend him a copy of the Constitution. The right to free speech protects against government interference. As a private citizen, Heard is free to say what she wants, but there are consequences. Liability for defamation is one of them. The verdict proved this point.

In the end, Depp won more than Heard. It’s probably because he had better lawyers. They were well prepared with a multitude of witnesses who denied his many claims. She also melted under scathing cross-examination. Nobody seemed to buy her crocodile tears. Her acting coach told the jury that she “had a hard time crying when she was playing”.
Sometimes it became an absurd battle of experts. Heard’s psychologist claimed she suffered from PTSD because of Depp. His expert claimed that Heard suffered from “borderline or histrionic personality disorder”. The most comedic pundit announced that Depp has “narcissistic personality disorder”. Oh good? Calling an actor narcissistic is redundant.

Depp could end up taking in more money than Heard, assuming she can cough up the net difference of $8 million. But believe me…it’s not over. Their bitterness and contempt for each other will surely inspire endless appeals. So stay tuned for what’s next. The madness will continue.
As Captain Jack Sparrow famously said, “Mad people don’t know they’re mad. And that’s the problem, isn’t it?
