ATHENS, Alabama (WHNT) — The Athens State University Board of Trustees announced Friday that Dr. Philip Way will step down as president of the university.
Way has served as Athens State President since his appointment by the Board of Trustees in May 2019. He was the 37th president of the university.
When announcing his resignation, Dr Way said: “I did what I wanted to do.”
Board chairman Arthur Orr called a special meeting of the board’s executive committee on Nov. 14 so they could formally accept Way’s resignation.
Way added in his statement that after spending years as provost and president at two universities, he would like to take some time to “rebalance [his] life, pay more attention to conventional faculty activities as well as family and personal activities.
The resignation will be effective at the end of the year. Dr. Catherine Wehlburg, Provost of the State of Athens and Vice President for Academic Affairs, will act as President until a new person is appointed.
