The Rapids get their hands on a promising defender

The Colorado Rapids acquired promising defenseman Gustavo Vallecilla from FC Cincinnati on Monday for $800,000 in general allowance money.

The amount is divided in two and distributed equally for the years 2022 and 2023.

Vallecilla, 22, began his professional career in Ecuador, his native country. He began his Major League Soccer (MLS) stint in 2021, scoring two goals in 25 games in Ohio.

“Gustavo is an explosive young defenseman who is one of the best center backs in the country,” Rapids general manager Padraig Smith said in a statement. We believe he has the qualities to become a dominant defender in this league and we look forward to welcoming him to the club.”

Vallecilla had been acquired by FC Cincinnati on a loan from SD Aucas, in the Ecuadorian first division. The North American team then exercised the purchase offer last December.
