the president proposes to form a new government and to modify the constitution – RT en français

After the defeat suffered by Armenia in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Armenian President Armen Sarkissian advocated early elections and the formation of a government of national unity to overcome the ongoing crisis.

Armenian President Armen Sarkissian traveled to Moscow last weekend to meet with the Armenian diaspora, one of the largest in the world, and to discuss with their representatives the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed region that is still recently a theater heavy fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan. During this “private visit”, the Head of State outlined solutions aimed at overcoming the crisis caused in the country by the military conflict.

“There is a civilized way: early elections [et] an interim government of national unity ”, declared the head of state. According to him, “in any country where such a tragedy has occurred, there is a solution: the government that led to it must leave.” “If a politician is strong, he can come back later. The last elections took place two and a half years ago, so the country was completely different, now we live in a different country, ”he added.

The Armenian president also said that a referendum should be held before the new elections in order to change the current constitution of the country. “Each constitution, whether it is a presidential or parliamentary regime, must include checks and balances”, insisted Armen Sarkissian quoted by the RIA Novosti agency. According to him, the President or the Prime Minister of Armenia should not alone take decisions with heavy consequences for the whole country. “It all has to be balanced. In our country, the constitution is not at all balanced ”, lamented the Armenian president, stressing that“ it is a crisis not of a country or a state, but of a crisis. nation, human rights, [c’est une crise] psychological, financial, economic, humanitarian. ”

The return of prisoners of war and Armenian hostages

Armen Sarkissian has asked Russian President Vladimir Putin for help with the return to Armenia of prisoners of war held in Azerbaijan. The message was posted on the Armenian President’s official website on November 30.

“In his letter, President Sarkissian indicates that Armenian society and the Diaspora are deeply concerned about the situation around the soldiers and civilians detained in Azerbaijan. The Russian president’s mediation would provide important support to help resolve an extremely painful problem – that of the return of our prisoners of war, civilians, as well as the bodies of victims, ”the press service of the presidential office said.
