Rory McIlroy will have another opportunity to defend his Players Championship title in the coming weeks, with 24-hour live coverage on the dedicated Sky Sports channel.
The Northern Irishman picked up a one-stroke victory at TPC Sawgrass in his winning FedExCup campaign in 2019, while McIlroy’s defense was cut short last year when the flagship PGA Tour event was called off after the first round due to the coronavirus pandemic.
McIlroy may become the first golfer in history to win successive editions of The Players, with the four-time major champion playing on a star-studded course in Florida for golf’s unofficial “fifth major”.
Dustin Johnson will have the opportunity to extend his edge at the top of the world rankings after being the dominant force in golf in recent months, with Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas also looking to win the event – and his first prize of 2.7 million of dollars – for the first time.
This year’s contest marks the 20th anniversary of Tiger Woods ‘”better-than-most” putt in the 17th par-three on his way to the players’ first of two wins, with the 15-time major champion featured as he continues to chase a record 83rd PGA Tour title.
Sky Sports will once again be the home of gamers, with eight hours of live content and preview on Tuesday March 9 and Wednesday March 10 on Sky Sports The Players before extensive coverage of the four tournament days from March 11-14.
