The last time Canada competed in the FIFA World Cup they had three losses and finished last among all the participating teams. For the majority of the process of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, they remained undefeated, losing ony to Costa Rica. They also beat two of their biggest competitors in Mexico and the U.S.

Costa Rica

During their qualifying match, Costa Rica achieved fourth place by displacing Panama by scoring one more point than they did. The player that made the winning goal that put Costa Rica in fourth place was Celso Borges. This give Costa Rica an advantage over Canada, who didn’t have a player on the level of Borges.

Mexico

Panama

Prior to 2022, Panama hadn’t qualified for the World Cup since 2018. At that time they came in third place, after Costa Rica and Mexico. When it comes to the 2022 World Cup, Panama beat both Jamaica and Honduras, to get ahead in the rankings. The Honduras game was notable because Panama achieved what may be the biggest comeback in the team’s history. Within the last 13 minutes of the game they went from a two-goal defecit to a win of 3-2.

USA
