The Morning After: GameStop’s Retro Gaming Pivot

GameStop has announced the launch of a group of retro gaming retail stores, which will carry physical consoles, discs, and cartridges from classic Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, and Sega platforms. The company announced on X that it will cover 18 classic systems, from the NES to the PS Vita. You can search for retro-friendly locations within a 100-mile radius on Gamestop’s website, but most will find these stores as rare as a mint-in-box copy. The trigger of a stopwatch.

It makes business sense for the game retailer. While most of us download our games from online stores (or have them delivered by Amazon), a combination of physical media and a degree of expertise could capitalize on GameStop’s strengths. The biggest challenge could be piracy.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has been formally charged by the French courts and is no longer able to leave the country. He was formally charged on Wednesday with “complicity in the distribution of child pornography, illegal drugs and hacking software” on the messaging app he founded. It’s been a while since we’ve had a first-person shooter on PlayStation. Firewalk Studios’ debut, the 5v5 team-based shooter ConcordeHowever, failed to capture the imagination of gamers. Is it because of the mediocre characters or the sometimes shameless Guardians of the Galaxy vibe? Well, they probably don’t help, but less than 700 concurrent players on Steam (and no fanfare announcement from Sony about the number of players/copies sold) indicates a dud.

For the record, no one asked me to play the team shooter – no one even asked me what I thought of it. Concorde.

However, Engadget’s Kris Holt points out that PlayStation had a good year. Helldivers 2published by Sony, is having a great year while the PlayStation Portal and PSVR 2 hardware continue to find interested buyers, thanks to strong support from handheld gamers. And some discounts on VR headsets.

Apple’s latest developer betas of iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 include a few more Apple Intelligence features. The most notable is a cleanup tool in the Photos app, very similar to Google’s Magic Eraser. The Photos app will identify distracting background elements for you, so you should be able to remove them with a single tap. Alternatively, you can circle or brush over an object you want to remove. The tool also works with any images in your camera roll.
