Phil Mickelson discusses the challenges Augusta National players face and why the course can sometimes be ‘defenseless’ in modern play

Phil Mickelson will make his 29th Masters appearance this year at the age of 50.

The southpaw, who won at Augusta National in 2004, 2006 and 2010, believes the prospect of firm greens this year will provide a tough test, unlike in November when Dustin Johnson triumphed with 20 under.

The greens were soft last fall, which made the course defenseless, according to Mickelson, but he says the current fast, spring-like conditions should give it the respect it deserves.

He said: “The guys are so precise in their ability to fly the golf ball the right distance with each club that if you have soft and responsive greens it’s like having an army and then not giving them weapons, it’s defenseless.

“So with firm greens it’s defense. It’s not like we have the rough US Open here. There aren’t any tight fairways. Defense is greens.

“And so, even if the course is lengthened, the ability for all the best players to fly the ball a specific distance with any club, if the ball lands on those sections, they will eat that course,” each route.

“However, when the greens are firm those little sections are very difficult to reach and you really have to strategize where you leave them. This is the whole defense of the golf course.

“So if it’s firm, I think it’s going to be a real test. And the big leagues should challenge and test the best players.

“It’s really hard work setting up a golf course properly because you’re always trying to find a line and not cross it, and it’s a tough thing to do. But I think with firm greens this golf course has to be respected, and I think it was a long time since it had to be respected. “

After turning 50 last June, Mickelson mixed Champions Tour events with PGA Tour tournaments and claimed two senior wins last year.

He says he enjoys playing on the Champions Tour but is not yet ready to stop playing against the best in the world.

“I’m having a lot more fun than I expected on the Champions Tour, but yet the challenge that gets me the most is trying to play and against the best players,” he said.
