We look back through Augusta’s archives, remembering Ian Woosnam’s dramatic Masters victory in 1991.

Two days away from this year’s Masters, we’ll take you 30 years back in 1991 to Augusta National and Ian Woosnam’s first major triumph.

Woosnam came in for his fourth Masters appearance second in the world behind reigning champion Nick Faldo, and with five top 10 finishes to his name in major championships.

The Welshman was five on the beat after a first round of 72, but he responded with an impressive 62 on day two, putting him two strokes behind halfway leader and home favorite Tom Watson.

Woosnam carried that good form until Saturday and landed a 67, which was good enough to get him the lead with 11 under, one ahead of Watson and three ahead of Ryder Cup teammate Jose Maria Olazabal.

He extended his advantage to three strokes on the turn on the final day, but bogeyed on the 10th and ran a six in the 13th, where Olazabal birdied and Watson energized the clients with an eagle-three.

Olazabal birdied 14 to level the game, and the two birdied the next as Watson rolled into another eagle putt to tie it three for the lead and set up a thrilling finish.

A play-off seemed a certainty with the leading trio still tied at the top playing the 18th, but Olazabal bogeyed and, with Watson struggling to save par, Woosnam missed the left green and threw six feet.

Watson failed to save the par, and Woosnam held his nerve to hit home the tricky putt for the winning par and was immediately swept aside by caddy Phil ‘Wobbly’ Morbey, creating another iconic image Masters.
