The Masters 2024 LIVE: Leaderboard and latest updates as Bryson DeChambeau sets the pace

Bubba Watson’s Daughter Dakota Makes Putts Ahead of the Masters

Bryson DeChambeau set the tone in the first round of the Masters as the LIV golfer topped the opening day leaderboard at Augusta National. The hard-hitting DeChambeau survived windy conditions at the first men’s major of the year to shoot an outstanding 65 on a course where he has had limited success in the past.

Scottie Scheffler leads the chasers and continues his excellent form with a good 66 to finish at six under. The dominant PGA Tour player and 2022 Green Jacket winner had arrived at Augusta as the favorite to add a second Masters crown to his collection and produced a typically composed and confident round.

The start of the game was delayed two and a half hours because of morning storms, and although the rain cleared, the wind posed challenges throughout the game. The soft surfaces, however, allowed players in control to score relatively freely, with many top golfers to the fore. Rory McIlroy signed for a 71 after bouncing back from a slow start, while bogeys on the final two holes left Jon Rahm, the defending champion, one over. The surprise of the day, however, was Danny Willett – playing his first tournament since shoulder surgery just six months ago, the 2016 Masters winner produced a fine 68 to suggest another enjoyable weekend on the pristine Georgia course.

Tiger Woods is off to a strong start after the five-time winner said he is aiming for “one more green jacket” to take him to 16 major titles, despite facing pain on the vast majority of shots at Augusta . He and a number of other players will conclude their first round on Friday after fading light forced a reduction in Thursday’s match.

Who is Bryson DeChambeau? The leader of the Masters, friend of Donald Trump

Ever since Bryson DeChambeau made his mark on the golf world, the “mad scientist” has always done things his way. Whether through his careful studies of golf theory and his obsessive desire to break down the mechanics of the perfect swing, or through his unprecedented commitment to “bulking season” and an unprecedented physical transformation that added even more power with his monstrous drive, the Californian left nothing overlooked in his incessant quest for perfection over 18 holes.

His best start at the Masters, taking a one-shot lead at 7-under par in the second round on Friday, was perhaps the clearest sign yet that DeChambeau is about to reap the rewards of his tireless work.

DeChambeau is already a major champion, scoring a dominant six-shot victory at the 2020 US Open at Winged Foot, but the 30-year-old showed a different side to his game as he put the finishing touches on an opening round 65. Can DeChambeau conquer Augusta National and tame the danger lurking behind the tranquility of Amen Corner?

Jack Nicklaus says focus is lacking behind Rory McIlroy failing to win Masters

Golf legend Jack Nicklaus criticized Rory McIlroy for his lack of concentration as the 88th Masters got off to a late start at Augusta National.

Overnight rain and the threat of thunderstorms saw the start of play pushed back from 8am to 10.30am, with honorary starters Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson kicking off proceedings 20 minutes early in hitting tee shots on the first before retiring to the clubhouse.

The trio then gave a lengthy press conference before Nicklaus joined Golf Channel’s “Live from the Masters” and explained why McIlroy had yet to win a green jacket to complete a career grand slam.

Masters weather forecast ahead of second round

Storms, wind and heavy rain delayed the start of the Masters on Thursday, with play pushed back two and a half hours.

The first day’s conditions were windy and punishing, punishing players who strayed from the line and rewarding those, like Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler, who used strong winds to their advantage.

Friday’s weather forecast calls for a complete turnaround with mostly sunny skies and dry conditions from players and patrons. A high of 23 degrees is forecast this afternoon, but overall it will be slightly cooler with less humid conditions. There will still be a west wind at 15-20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph throughout the day.

Nick Faldo thinks Rory McIlroy has at least another decade of chances at the Masters

Sir Nick Faldo believes Rory McIlroy has at least another decade of opportunity to win the Masters, despite the scars from his previous attempts.

McIlroy squandered a four-shot lead in the final round in 2011 and has recorded six top 10s at Augusta National since winning the 2014 Open, requiring him to wear a green jacket to complete a career grand slam .

The world number two finished second to Scottie Scheffler in 2022 thanks to a thrilling final round of 64 and is second seed behind the same player this week after finishing third at the Texas Open on Sunday.
