Some golfers can go their entire careers without a hole-in-one, but Tommy Fleetwood celebrated his second ace in as many events in the Masters’ first round.

The Englishman made a hole in one in his last game of last 16 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play last month, only to land another slamdunk at the end of his first round at Augusta National.

Fleetwood had started the men’s major tournament of the year slowly and had four points after 15 holes, failing to birdie but saw his fortunes change dramatically at the 16th par-three.

With a new iron in hand, Fleetwood went for an aggressive line over the 170-yard hole and saw his tee shot pick up a few rebounds before rolling down the center of the cup for a hole-in-one.

The ace saw Fleetwood jump to two and less than nine strokes from compatriot Justin Rose, who opened up a four-stroke advantage after setting the tone with a superb opening round of 65.

“It was a beautiful shot!” Fleetwood said after the tour. “It was between the clubs and I was on the edge of a smooth eight (iron), but Finno [Ian Finnis, caddie] said a tough nine.

“It was a slight pull, it didn’t go straight on the pin, but it was still a good shot and I did some bounces and in! The course is playing hard and up to this point I didn’t have any momentum, so it was good to do something special and shoot something out of the round. “
