The long Holi weekend sees an increase in travel; Skyrocketing flight ticket bookings

This month’s long weekend, starting with Holi, has led to a surge in travel bookings as Indians seek domestic and international travel destinations to unwind.

Airline bookings, in particular, saw a 40-50% increase for the weekend compared to the same period last year, according to data from online travel company EaseMyTrip. This highlights the pent-up demand for travel, especially among young professionals after around two years of COVID-19 restrictions. The average age of long weekend travelers is 25-40.

“We saw a 50% increase in airfare bookings for this long weekend, which was further supported by the easing of travel restrictions. Travel sentiment is reviving strongly as we witness growing demand for offbeat and international destinations, which is an optimistic step towards full travel normality,” said Nishant Pitti, CEO and Co-Founder of EaseMyTrip.

“This momentum will continue as we expect pent-up travel demand to continue throughout the year, contributing to the much-needed revival of the industry,” he added.

Bookings for destinations like Goa, Kashmir, Himachal saw a 40-50% increase, while international destinations like Dubai and Sri Lanka were also popular destinations for those wishing to travel out of the country for the weekend.

A surprising but intuitive change has been the growing preference for 5-star hotels, partly because of the short duration of stay on weekends but also because of higher sanitary expectations in hotels.

Nearly a third of all bookings made are flexible bookings or have cancellation policies or refund measures.
