Manchester Originals captain Jos Buttler’s fifty came in vain as Harry Brook and Adam Lyth helped the Northern Superchargers to a six-wicket victory in The Hundred…

History of the game

The names may be different, but the Roses’ rivalry remained fierce as a Lancashire side (Manchester Originals) took on a Yorkshire side (Northern Superchargers) in Friday’s game at Emirates Old Trafford.

The Buttler Originals skipper hit 59 from 41, including one six-and five-four, before being knocked down by a googly Adil Rashid as the hosts scored 161-4, their highest tally in the tournament so far day.

But that was overshadowed by the Superchargers with six balls to spare as Lyth (51 from 30) and David Willey (29 from 21) fired before Brook (33no from 19) and David Wiese (15no from six) took the visitors at 162-4 from 94 deliveries.

  • Manchester Originals 161-4 from 100 balls – Buttler (59 out of 41), Madsen (43 out of 26); Willey (2-24 of 20), Rashid (1-20 of 20)
  • Northern Superchargers 162-4 from 94 balls – Lyth (51 out of 30), Brook (33 out of 19); Turner (1-7 out of 5), Parkinson (1-20 out of 20)

Brook’s two sixes on Originals spinner Tom Hartley left the Superchargers needing just 12 out of 10 and Wiese quickly settled the proceedings with a six and then a four on fast Aussie Sean Abbott.

The Superchargers got the better of the Originals in the teams’ full game against each other last season, slamming a club-record 200 on a tumultuous night at Headingley, and they’ve earned bragging rights again here.

In the Originals innings, Buttler was backed by Wayne Madsen (43 of 26) and late cameos from Andre Russell (29 of 20) and Paul Walter (23 of 10) – Russell and Walter hitting three sixes apiece – while with the ball for Superchargers, Rashid conceded just 20 runs on as many balls and Willey took two wickets, including Phil Salt for just one.

Rashid’s figures of 1-20 from 20 balls were matched by compatriot Matt Parkinson in the Superchargers chase, the latter having Willey caught deep.

Match hero Adam Lyth is confident his side can improve on their sixth-place finish in The Hundred last year

Lyth said: “We talked at halftime about trying to take over the power play, so it was good to have some points and for the team to cross the line at the end. With our batting lineup, “We were very confident. Last year it wasn’t too good or us, finishing sixth. We can do a lot better this year.”

What They Said – ‘Brook was made up at the end’

Skipper Superchargers, Faf du Plessis: “It was a very good start for us. I thought [Originals] There were about 10 points over par, so it was important for us to get ahead of them on the power play, which I think we did.

“Then the guys stayed at that pace throughout. There was really good composure at the end of Brooky [Harry Brook], who is a mature young man. Lyth’s inings were also very good. You need someone to get those fifty plus innings to give you a chance to win.”

Buttler hit five fours and a six on his 59-for-41 run at Emirates Old Trafford

Captain of the Originals, Jos Buttler: “I thought when we had the pressure on them they needed a release and managed to find it. I feel like the ball maybe skidded a bit more than it did done in our rounds, but thanks to the opposition I thought they managed to take the right risk at the right time.”

And after?
