Trent Rockets claimed four hundred out of five wins with a 25-point victory over Oval Invincibles, inspired by Alex Hales’ work in front of his home crowd at Trent Bridge.

Trent Rockets: 181-4 on 100 balls – Hales (59 on 29 balls), Malan (38 on 29 balls); Hasnain (2-28 in 15 balls)

Oval Invincibles: 156-5 on 100 balls – Curran (27 on 19 balls), Cox (61 on 33 balls); Shamsi (2-21 on 20 balls)

History of the game

Hales’ superb 59-for-29 balls included four sixes and six-fours and gave the Rockets the platform to post a tough 181 for four, backed by leading scorer Dawid Malan 38-for-29 and consolidated by skipper Lewis Gregory combining with Colin Munro to add 41 of last 19 deliveries.

Although Jordan Cox countered with an unbeaten 61 from 33, the Invincibles could not recover from losing their first three wickets for 42 from 35 balls, with South African left-arm spinner Tabraiz Shamsi finding a degree of notable turn by taking two for 21.

After the Rockets were set up, Malan had the six-meter from ball four, but spent the next 40 largely admiring his teammate as Hales put on an extraordinary display of his clean-hitting skills.

Hales, who survived a first review ball from lbw, took a special liking to Sam Curran, plundering three highs on the left handarmer, which he hammered 20 carries in a run of five. He had surpassed 10,000 career short format runs in the previous set and looked unstoppable.

His fourth six – Sydney Thunder team-mate Mohammad Hasnain – sailed over the roof of the Fox Road stand and into Nottingham night as his fifty came out on just 22 balls.

But after he left for 59, picking the borderline midwicket defender as Hasnain got revenge, the Rockets lost some momentum and it took the business of Gregory and Munro to death to put the Invincibles put to the test.

Phoebe Graham’s The Hundred blog I ‘Always someone to win’

We’re heading into week two of the Women’s Hundred, so who better to reflect on what happened than Manchester Originals’ Phoebe Graham.

In between, Malan’s shot had come to an end when Jason Roy caught a very low hold in the covers that required a referee’s review to confirm, Tom Kohler-Cadmore got the score wrong and Daniel Sams threw a straight to deep square leg.

The ordeal before the visitors soon grew still heavier. Will Jacks was fresh from his brilliant unbeaten 108 last time out but Sam Cook had his number on this occasion, denied his wicket on an lbw review in his opening set and watched him survive a high profile draw before tossing it with a perfect yorker.

Roy at least dodged another duck, but the 20 of 17 encountered a Shamsi Ripper that knocked his leg stump off. Shamsi had Sam Billings front leg with one that went through three bullets later.

Curran built himself a start but perished for 27 years, running away with a steepler which Tom Moores inexplicably knocked down only for the wicketkeeper to redeem himself for the next ball with a stump that earned bowler Samit an instant pardon patel.

It wasn’t the best of nights on the court for the Rockets, with Cox bombarded on third court on 32 and Sunil Narine on 16 by Moores – tough this time – in the same Luke Wood.

But with 66 needed on 20 balls despite Narine throwing a free kick down the rope from range, the winning line looked too far for the Invincibles, despite Cox hitting three sixes.

Hero of the match, Alex Hales (59 out of 29 balls)

Nasser Hussein discussed Hales’ performance: “I really try to choose people based on their ability as a cricketer. He committed the crime, he’s had his day… forgive me, move on.

“He’s getting into this long line of players now. There’s no Morgan, Stokes in over-50 cricket is gone, so there’s a couple of opportunities. Obviously top of the order, but you have Will Jacks, Jason Roy, Phil Salt, Will Smeed.

“But, you can’t tell me from what we’ve seen from national franchises around the world…Alex Hales is a serious cricketer.

“Try to pick your best team, but they might know something else, that inner core of senior players might not want that.”

And after?
