MADISON, Ala. (WHNT) – Governor Kay Ivey visited Huntsville on Thursday and took the time to announce funding for a much-needed expansion project for Highway 72 from Huntsville to Madison.
Governor Ivey also announced the expansion of I-565 east on Chapman Mountain and improvements to Route 53.
Ivey made the announcement during his annual address to local business and civic leaders in Madson County at a Thursday afternoon luncheon.
The project will run from the Providence Main/US 72 intersection to the Wall Triana/US 72 intersection. Funding will come from the City of Huntsville, City of Madison and the state through the Rebuild Alabama Project.
According to the Alabama Department of Transportation, the project will expand the current four-lane divided freeway into a six-lane divided freeway with fewer access points and median crossings. The project will also modify several intersections along the alignment.
