The place of French in public schools at the heart of the debate

The government, for its part, supports its point by evoking article 2 of the Constitution which “provides that the language of the Republic is French” and means not to wish “that the place of French as the language of the Republic be called into question. education and the life of public education establishments ”. “Without doubt this is ultimately the only valid reason that the government intends to invoke to prevent the development of education in the regional language. But basically, would the government be afraid that students could no longer master French with such pedagogy? “, Asks” So that our languages ​​live “.

The government advocates French-Breton “bilingualism”

The government also mentions in its amendment the decree of the Council of State, which deemed “illegal” a decree instituting immersion education: a statement deemed “zany” by the collective which explains: “It is precisely the The object of article 2 of this proposal is to change the law, so that such teaching is no longer considered illegal ”. The government, for the time being, intends instead to support its current methodology: bilingual French-regional language education “at parity of time”. And to recall that the circular of April 2017 “on the assessments carried out in the various regions concerned confirmed the interest of bilingualism. This is why the openings of bilingual classes at school have been developed and the existing sections in middle and upper secondary schools consolidated and extended ”.

On March 31, in our columns, Paul Molac already said that the article recognizing immersive teaching in public schools had been maintained “hard” for the discussion of April 8 in the National Assembly. “We will have to be vigilant to be able to confirm it during the session,” he predicted. The discussion promises to be complicated. However, according to Paul Molac and the defenders of Breton and regional languages, the form of immersion education “is the most likely to be able to generate young speakers of the regional language”.
