‘The good people of Arsenal’ let go during Stan Kroenke’s reign and Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp’s involvement in any takeover ‘can only be good’, says Jack Wilshere

Jack Wilshere says ‘a lot of Arsenal people’ have left the club since he was there, but have refused to be drawn to criticism of the property.

Wilshere joined the Gunners at the age of nine and progressed into the first team making nearly 200 appearances before leaving in 2018.

Much of his time in the first team coincided with the reign of Stan Kroenke, who completed his takeover of Arsenal in 2011.

Fans have been unhappy with the owners for some time and this has culminated with protests outside the Emirates following the club’s involvement in the botched European Super League.

Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek, backed by club legends Thierry Henry Dennis Bergkamp and Patrick Vieira, has expressed interest in buying the Gunners, but the Kroenkes have reiterated their desire to stay.

Wilshere told talkSPORT Breakfast: “It wouldn’t be fair for me to comment on the current owners. One thing I will say is that since my time there, there are a lot of people who are no longer there.

“They were real Arsenal people who had been there for years. I’m not just talking about [former manager] Arsène Wenger, it was physiotherapists, staff around the square who were all let go.

“You need these people at the club who know what this means for the fans. They know what fans want and can pass it on to managers.

“In terms of someone taking over. With people like Thierry and Dennis, who are real Arsenal people and can have a say in what happens at the top, I think it can only be good at the club.

Things are not happy at Arsenal as the club are set for their worst season since 1994/95 when they finished 12th.

Mikel Arteta’s side crashed out of the Europa League on Thursday night with a 2-1 loss to Villarreal.

The Gunners are currently ninth and face the prospect of European football for the first time since the 1995/96 season.

“I watched the game. It was difficult to watch. They needed a moment in the game, someone to take the game, but unfortunately that didn’t come, ”said Wilshere.

“It’s disappointing for the fans, I’m an Arsenal fan, it will be hard not to see them in Europe next year.

“In the first leg I thought Villarreal were the better team, but Arsenal gave themselves a chance at home, where you would like to think they would have at least a 1-0 victory.

“Without fans it’s a little different, but we expect to see more urgency.”

Recruiting has been a problem for Arsenal with more hiccups than successes in recent deals.

Nicolas Pepe has yet to show why they paid £ 71million as Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard are disappointed against Villarreal.

Willian signed a huge three-year contract while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been poor since signing a new deal.

Wilshere said: “They are good players. Thomas Partey is a leading player. I played against him in the Europa League semi-finals and he was one of the toughest I’ve played against.

“The recruitment is not due to Arteta. He’s the coach, he’s the manager and he chooses the team.

“It’s up to him to make the most of it, but I wouldn’t say recruiting comes back to him more.

When asked if Arteta isn’t getting the best out of the players, Wilshere said: “I wouldn’t say that. It’s hard for me to say that I’m no longer there.

“As a player you try to get the most out of yourself. You want to perform because you have pride in yourself and if you want to continue your career and play in Europe, you put the pressure on yourself to play.
