According to the country’s health secretary, Matt Hancock, who attributes the drop in “new variant” cases of Covid-19 in the UK.

Britons arriving home from ‘high-risk’ countries must undergo a 10-day hotel quarantine at their own expense in a bid to tighten border controls in an attempt to curb one of the world’s worst coronavirus outbreaks.

The UK has the highest death toll from Covid-19 in Europe, with more than 120,000 deaths, and remains under strict pandemic restrictions, in part due to a new, more transmissible variant of the coronavirus first discovered times in the south-east of England. Other variants, including those first detected in South Africa and Brazil, are also spreading around the world.

“In the last week or so there have been just over a dozen new cases, which is a lot smaller than what we were seeing just a few weeks ago,” Hancock told Sky News on Tuesday. morning.

“So the extra measures we’re taking at the border are working, and the lower case rate makes it much less likely that there will be new variants here, as newer variants tend to increase when you have an area that has a very high case rate and virus trying to evade immunity become naturally, ”he added.

Asked how the government’s plan to ease the lockdown in England, released on Monday, would affect the spread of the South African and Brazilian variants, Hancock replied, “Well, the good news is that the number of new variants of cases that we find across the UK have fallen quite sharply over the past month. “

“Continued work” is needed to understand the effectiveness of vaccines against the South African and Brazilian variants, he said, and this will impact a government review of international travel restrictions announced yesterday.

After the interview, Hancock tweeted that Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s roadmap on locking down England is “only possible with the deployment of the vaccine”.

“It is vital that everyone plays their part so that we can get out of this as soon as possible,” he added.
