Gabby Petito’s family, who went missing on a road trip across the country, said on Tuesday that the New York woman’s fiancé refused to help them find her, begging him to “at least tell us if we let’s look in the right area “.

Petito, 22, and Brian Laundrie embarked on a cross-country trip in a converted white camper van from New York City on July 2, his family said.

Her family reported her missing on September 11. Laundrie recently returned alone with the van to her parents’ home in North Port, Florida, where he and Petito lived, police said.

“Brian refuses to tell Gabby’s family where he last saw her. Brian also refuses to explain why he left Gabby alone and drove his van to Florida,” Petito’s family said in a press release through their lawyer Richard Stafford.

“These are critical questions that require immediate answers,” the family said.

Petito’s family released the statement shortly after Laundrie’s lawyer Steven Bertolino broke the Laundrie family’s silence, saying: “This is naturally an extremely difficult time for the Petito family and the Laundrie family. . “

“On the advice of the lawyer, the Laundrie family remains in the background at this stage and will have no further comments,” the statement said.

Petito’s family said in their statement that they “prayed to the Laundrie family not to ‘stay in the background’ but to help find who Brian called the love of his life.”

“How does Brian stay in the background when he’s the only person who knows Gabby’s whereabouts?” said Petito’s family. “The Schmidt and Petito family are begging Brian to come forward and at least tell us if we’re looking in the right area.”

They added, “The Schmidt and Petito family are going through the worst times of their lives. Their twenty-two-year-old beautiful daughter is missing and the only person who can help find Gabby is refusing to help.”

Petito’s last known location is believed to be in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.

“Brian Laundrie was traveling with Gabby in the Grand Teton – Yellowstone area,” Petito’s family said. “They were traveling together in Gabby’s 2012 Ford Transit van. This is where we think Gabby was last seen.”

Florida Police seized the van and a spokesperson for the North Port Police Department told Insider the vehicle “may be key evidence” in the case.

Police spokesman Josh Taylor also said Insider Laundrie’s family refused to let him speak to investigators.
