The “driver’s license” is a huge success. See how Olivia Rodrigo made her song # 1.

[dial tone] “Hey.” “Hi. Oh my God, this is so exciting. May I just say before I start, I am so honored to be here. I watch them religiously, so thank you very much for inviting me. Singing, ‘I’ Got my driver’s license last week, as we always talked about. Because you were so excited I was finally driving to your place. “” It was the craziest week of my life. ” “Wait, so you’re in the second semester of last year, and you’ve just released your first single?” “Yeah, first half. I’m not even second. I’m dying here. ‘Is this your first number one single?’ “Yes, from afar, yes.” Singing, “Today I drove through the suburbs because how could I ever love someone else?” “I grew up in the suburbs. I grew up in Temecula, Calif. I sang in talent shows and the like. I sang” Don’t Stop Believin, “” which I think is on YouTube, somewhere in the depths of the internet. Sing: “Don’t stop believing”. “I have always been obsessed with country music.” Sing, “Please don’t take my name.” “I am obsessed with Taylor Swift.” Sing: “The demons roll the dice. The angels roll their eyes. “I moved to LA when I was 12 to start filming a show that was on the Disney Channel.” “One two three four. Bizaardvark. We like to keep it weird. We make crazy videos and we look good in a beard.” “This is actually where I learned to play guitar for the first time, a skill that has become very useful to me. And then after that show, I went straight to ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’, which is the show I’m running right now. “The list of actors is published. We have our Gabriella. “The biggest blessing of this show is that I got to write a few songs for the show.” Sing, “All I want is love that lasts.” Is that all I want too much to ask? “I’ve been writing original music since I could speak. I never showed it to anyone, ever, until recently. “Someone said to me, ‘Hey, you gotta see that girl, Olivia Rodrigo’ and I went to her Instagram.” Singing, ‘And I hope you’re happy.’ “There was a song called ‘Happier’, and I listened to it and I was like, ‘Oh my God. This song is amazing.’ It’s amazing. ‘ “That’s how he found me and he made me a DM and he was like Yo.” “Have you ever seen ‘Bizaardvark’ or ‘High School Musical’?” “No no. I still haven’t and Olivia tells me I’m not allowed to watch it. It’s like a separate world for her. “In fact, I had really just gotten my driver’s license, and had gone driving around my little suburban neighborhood, listening to music and crying. I was listening to “Minor” by Gracie Abrams. Sing: “MINOR I’m hardly a star.” “There were so many intense emotions in my head and I was going through so much. And there are so many thoughts and so many different aspects of this breakup. So when I got home I sat down at my piano. Sing, “I got my driver’s license last week, which we always talked about.” “And I was looking in my diary, actually recently, and I literally wrote, ‘I got my driver’s license last week.’ And that was the opening of my diary entry and that is the opening of the song. And then I took it to my producer Dan, who’s like my favorite person to collaborate with, and I was like, ‘Hey Dan, can I play something for you? I think this might be the best song I’ve ever written. “And I was like, ‘OK, cool.’ And so she sat down and played it for me on that piano. “I haven’t taken piano lessons for a very long time, but I think it’s called suspension, where you strike a note. And then you make different melodies with your other hand, like – just that note over and over again. I feel like it’s a little heartbreaking and it draws you in. “Have you thought about how it looked like the door open signal on a car?” “No, I didn’t. I remember thinking about putting a car sound in it and I almost didn’t say it because I was like, ‘He’s going to think that’s stupid. auto? Open the door and beep? ” [slamming car door] “And she was like, ‘Of course.’ And so she sent me a vocal note and we put it in the song. “Once we did it, I was like, ‘Oh, that’s great.’ And then she hated it. And then she said, ‘I don’t like it. I don’t want the car sounds in there anymore, ‘and I remember saying,’ No, I think we’re not going to keep those car sounds here. “” I wanted it to go – I wanted it to be a small thing because I wanted people to create TikToks where they could transition into them. And I thought if there was a little thing, there would be a signal, and people made TikToks like that. So I’m really happy with it. But it’s okay – I like it, sort of, ascending. You continue with the agreement. And I love sevenths, so I tried to put that in there. And it was really powerful, and I thought if I went up with my voice – “Singing:” I know we weren’t perfect, but I never felt that way. “Originally she wanted to sing everything in falsetto, and I was like, ‘You have to belt him.'” Singing, “And I can’t imagine how you could be so good now that I’m gone.” “And I think it was the best decision ever. It is so moving. Throughout the song, I almost feel like I’m going to break. Sing, “I guess you weren’t thinking what you wrote about me in that song.” “It’s so hopeless, like desperation, and I think that basically made the song what it is.” “There were a few other lines where you changed the lyrics.” Sing, “I bet you’re with that dark-haired girl, the one I’ve always thought about. And you are probably with this blonde girl, who always made me doubt. “Yeah, I think that was the funniest part of finishing the song with Dan, is having his opinion on little things like that.” “On that one word -” Sing: “Today I drove through the suburbs.” “Is that a reverb tremolo thrown on the ‘suburbs’ was my only moment of, ‘can we get a production turn in the second verse?’ We ended up recording the song, for example, the initial version was 15 BPM faster than the version coming out to the world. Sing, “Yeah, today I walked through the suburbs and imagined I was coming home.” “It was way too fast.” “We liked the movement of it all, but felt like it was more emotional when it was slower.” “She walked into the studio on day three, and she just looked at me – she’s like, ‘Dan, I’m so sorry, but I think we did it wrong. And we have to start all over again. And I was so sad. “Oh no, we have to do this” – but she was right. I knew she was right ”Sing:“ Because you said forever, now I’m driving alone in front of your street. “And then with the bridge it was like we had to make a huge bridge out of it.” And I said to myself: “I’m all low.” “The word stop signs.” I think it must be visual and stop signs. And all of a sudden Olivia was like, ‘Red lights’, and we were like ‘Oh’. Sing: “Red lights, stop signs. “OK, those are all the things you see when you are driving, we were like ‘Oh yeah’.” Singing: “White cars, yards ahead.” “I felt like we were on fire. We were on fire. ‘wrote so quickly.’ Dan was like, ‘What if we said that I [expletive] I love you?’ And I’m like, ‘This is great. Let’s do it. “Sing:” Because I [expletive] I love you baby. “” I don’t like cursing in songs, but I’ll take credit for it if she wants to give it to me. “” And I think that’s really cool – that I swore in my first song. It’s a nice, “Look, I’m an adult, I can say” – I’m not an adult, but I’m 17. ”Singing:“ Sidewalks that we crossed, I always hear your voice in traffic. We laugh. “” First of all, the people are so talented. And all of their covers and dance videos blow my mind. My favorite ‘Driver’s License’ TikToks are the Dog TikToks. It’s just my favorite thing. . It was just crazy. My whole life changed in an instant. It was strange. ” “The label is like, ‘Wow, the numbers are – everything is great. “” “He’s No. 1 in the world on all streaming platforms and breaks all of those records. But I haven’t left my house.” When did you get your driver’s license? ” ‘six months ago. I got my driver’s license, and I have a song too. So I say, overall it was worth it. “Are you a good driver?” “Yeah! ” [car honks]
