Researchers hope the findings may provide a roadmap for longer lasting immunity against Covid variants

Higher levels of T cells caused by the common cold make it less likely that a person will catch Covid, according to an “important finding” described in a new peer-reviewed study.

The study, published Monday by researchers at Imperial College London, is the “first evidence of a protective role for these T cells,” concluding that their presence at high levels after a cold may help protect against infection with Covid.

“Our study provides the clearest evidence to date that cold coronavirus-induced T cells play a protective role against SARS-CoV-2 infection,” Professor Ajit Lalvani, lead author of the study, wrote. He said that the cells “Provide protection by attacking the proteins of the virus, rather than the spike protein on its surface.” “

The study began in September 2020, when most UK citizens had not been infected with Covid, by taking blood samples from participants within six days of their exposure to the virus. He explored the levels of T cells created by the common cold that recognized Covid proteins.

In individuals who were not infected with Covid, levels of cross-reacting T cells were significantly higher than in those who caught the virus, showing that T cells target internal Covid proteins.

The researchers hope the study can influence the potential development of new Covid vaccines, as the current jabs do not induce an immune response to internal proteins.

“New vaccines which include these conserved internal proteins would therefore induce largely protective T lymphocyte responses which should protect against current and future variants of SARS-CoV-2” said Professor Lalvani.

Despite the “Significant discovery”, Lead author Dr Rhia Kundu made it clear that existing T cells are “one form of protection” and “No one should trust that alone” claiming that vaccination is the most effective way to protect against Covid.
