The busiest summer travel season expected since the start of the pandemic

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – The official start of summer is getting closer and travel is increasing. According to AAA, flight, rental car, cruise and hotel bookings for Memorial Day weekend are up 122% over last year’s holiday.

AAA Alabama spokesman Clay Ingram told News 19 that the recent increase in gas prices doesn’t seem to be deterring summer travelers. “It looks like our demand is going to increase as we get into Memorial Day,” Ingram explained. “And the summer travel season is going to be very busy again; many people still travel, regardless of price.

More and more people are heading to the airport. On May 9, more than 2.2 million travelers passed through TSA checkpoints nationwide; nearly 89% of TSA travelers saw the same day in 2019.

Numbers have also increased locally; Huntsville International Airport spokeswoman Mary Swanstrom told News 19 the airport is ready for a busy summer.

“We are currently at around 87.7% passengers from this time in 2019, which was the highest volume year the airport has seen to date,” Swanstrom explained.

With the number of travelers on the rise and more families going on summer vacation, Swanstrom urged people to get to the airport early.

“Really give yourself plenty of time to travel with the kids,” she shared. “Plan to be at the airport an hour and a half earlier or earlier.”

Another advice she gave – book your trip early. Swanstrom said this will ensure you get the lowest fares and your preferred flight times.

Huntsville International also added new routes, bringing the total number of nonstop destinations to 14. Nonstop services to Miami and Denver have already begun while flights to Las Vegas will begin in August.
