‘The Boys’ Season 4 Opens Up 46% Split Between Critic And Audience Scores

The Boys is back with new weekly episodes following its three-episode premiere last week, with the next one airing tomorrow, Thursday June 20. And it’s probably a sign of the times that this season, which aired two years after the third, opened There is a wide gap between critics and audiences, at least the kind of audiences that like to score points as a sign of protest.

You can see what happened here and what changed:

  • The Boys Season 1 – 85% reviews, 90% audience
  • The Boys Season 2 – 97% reviews, 83% audience
  • The Boys Season 3 – 98% reviews, 75% audience
  • The Boys Season 4 – 95% reviews, 49% audience

The running theory here is that a significant portion of the audience has realized that the play is about them, as The Boys has become increasingly forceful about its political allegory to the extent that it is barely an allegory at this stage. Season 3 had Homelander literally playing out the “Trump might shoot someone on Fifth Avenue” scenario, and now Season 4 has gone straight into Qanon and Pizzagate territory, with a man showing up at the youth shelter of Starlight with a gun to “free the children”. ”, something that also literally happened to the pizzeria in the absurd Pizzagate conspiracy. Meanwhile, showrunner Eric Kripke has bluntly stated that new supe/podcast host Firecracker was directly inspired by conservative Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

There are also cKripke’s previous comments that specifically say he doesn’t care what this part of the public thinks:

“I definitely have a point of view, and I don’t hesitate to put that point of view into the show. Anyone who wants to call the show “woke” or whatever, that’s okay. Go watch something else. But I’m certainly not going to make gestures or apologize for what we’re doing.

This reminds me of Brie Larson’s famous quote about wanting more female critics of the industry, which resulted in her being portrayed as a villain for almost a decade and her movie review being bombed for being below almost every other Marvel project. But it is much more explicit.

It seems that in recent times the reluctance towards “woke” media has become much more pronounced. I just wrote about how The Acolyte bombed into oblivion with a 14% score putting it well below any other Star Wars project in history, including the Holiday Special, with constant complaints from outraged fans and YouTubers about plot points like “lesbian witches”. » would have modified the Star Wars canon.

This seems to be happening with The Boys as his comments become less and less subtle. And as a result, this was fed into the outrage machine. Here are some of the YouTube results when you simply search for “The Boys Review:”

  • Boys: AWAKEN UNSUFFERABLE now? (this is the best result of all)
  • Season 4 of The Boys is DESTORYED by fans after waking up. Showrunner tells fans to go fuck themselves
  • The Boys Season 4: Awakening from the Dumpster Fire

And, unironically, I was served a search result “The Acolyte Episode 4 is F***ing Brain Rot (Review)” in the same listing, if that gives you any indication of the links here.

I made my own comment earlier, saying that I think The Boys East being a little too obvious now in exactly replicating real-world events, even though my politics fully align with Kripke’s. This is one of the most common complaints here, and I don’t think it helps the season, but overall I think so far it’s still going well. We’ll see how things unfold over the course of the episodes.
