The “automatic” driving license in full swing in the country of Lesneven – Brest

While antibiotics are not automatic, cars are more and more automatic. For ten years, sales of new vehicles with automatic transmissions (which automatically determine the best transmission ratios NDLR) have more than tripled in France, going in 2010 from 8.9% to more than 35% in 2020.

Sensing this noticeable change in driving habits, the instructor Benoît Kerdoncuff, 48, specialized in this teaching in the region of Lesneven, he who lives in Kernilis, after six years in traditional driving schools. According to him, the advantages are multiple, and first of all at the financial level: “In automatic gearbox, there are fewer hours of training, thirteen minimum against twenty minimum. Driving licenses are expensive. On average, in manual mode, it is around 1,500 €, against 1,200 €. The auto box is democratizing. A few years ago, it was mainly intended for people who had health problems, physical, even psychological problems. It’s true that passing reports and observing the environment can be complicated. Today, that has changed ”.

“We are less stressed to observe the environment”

This is the other advantage, according to him, of this type of driving: “We always have our hands on the steering wheel, so we hardly deal with the mechanical side any more, except for accelerating and braking. We are less stressed to observe the environment… ”.

What has also changed is the automotive market. Formerly the prerogative of large engines, automatic cars are now manufactured by almost all brands. “The cost of the vehicle, the fuel consumption, it has become almost equivalent”.

Manual return possible without exam

The holder of an automatic transmission license will therefore see this specificity written on his diploma. But for those who will then want to drive a vehicle with a manual gearbox, “it is possible to take a seven-hour training course in a traditional driving school (online driving schools do not do this), after having driven at least three months. on automatic transmission. The driver then receives a certificate and this leads to a transformation on the driving license. Of course without taking the exam again, ”explains Benoît Kerdoncuff.

Not easier

However, be careful. For those who think that the passage of the driving license is an automatic formality, the monitor turns on the “warnings”: “Learning is easier, of course. But the conditions of the passage are identical, the criteria are the same: safety, observation in the mirrors, etc. However, the inspector will not be more tolerant ”.
