As Vladimir Putin ponders the extent of Ukraine to be conquered, it is worth recalling a time when a US presidential candidate was ridiculed by his opponent for being right about the Russian autocrat. We’re referring to Mitt Romney, the 2012 GOP nominee, who said at the time that Russia was America’s main geopolitical enemy.
President Obama used the scene of a presidential debate to mock Mr. Romney. “Governor Romney, I’m glad you recognize al-Qaeda is a threat because a few months ago when you were asked what the biggest geopolitical threat facing America was, you said Russia,” Obama said. “And the 1980s are now calling for a return of their foreign policy because, you know, the Cold War has been over for 20 years.”
