The 2022 Players Championship | Anirban Lahiri finishes second behind Australian Cameron Smith

With a runner-up finish at the 2022 Players Championship in Florida, USA on Monday, Indian professional golfer Anirban Lahiri equaled his best finish on the PGA Tour. The previous best performance for an Indian was a T2 finish at the Memorial Tournament, in 2017.

After a tumultuous final day at TPC Sawgrass, Anirban Lahiri finished a stroke behind Australian Cameron Smith with under 12. Lahiri, a two-time Olympian, entered the final day of The Players, the most prestigious tournament on the PGA Tour, with a one-stroke lead on the court. The Indian was able to maintain his lead on the last seven holes of the third round, which was due to end on Monday due to inclement weather on Sunday.

Smith, meanwhile, edged Lahiri in the fourth and final round standings, birding five of his first six holes against Lahiri’s. Lahiri’s tee shot veered significantly off course into the bushes on the par-three eighth hole, forcing him to take a drop and finish with a double bogey. With a birdie in the ninth, the Indian responded nicely.

With Smith’s three consecutive bogeys to close out the front nine, there was a five-ahead tie going into the final nine holes, with Smith and Lahiri in contention. Lahiri then hit an eagle and a birdie on the 11th and 17th holes, respectively. Smith, meanwhile, was unstoppable, birdying four straight from the 10th to 13th hole and then another on the 17th.

“I want to win. I’ve been here seven years; haven’t crossed the line yet. It’s definitely a monkey I want to get rid of my back. Today was as good an opportunity as any “I tried hard. I made mistakes today that I could have avoided, but that’s golf,” said Anirban Lahiri.

Lahiri would have been only the second Indian to win on the PGA Tour after Arjun Atwal (2010 Wyndham Championship) and the third Asian golfer to win The Players after Koreans KJ Choi (2011) and Si Woo Kim (2017).
